The Play: Having opened on London’s West End in 1952, “The Mousetrap” is the longest-running play in the history of the world. It is a classic “whodunit,” which is set in Berkshire, England in the post-World War II years. Eight mysterious characters find themselves snowbound in an old manor house, and one of them is murdered. Each of the characters is hiding secrets from their past, as they try to avoid being the last mouse “caught in the trap.”

ROLE BREAKDOWN

Mollie Ralston

A seemingly innocent and apparently naïve woman in her late twenties. She recently married Giles. Having inherited Monkswell Manor from her aunt, she has decided to run it as a guest house rather than sell it. Some years earlier (during World War II) she had taught school, and she is familiar with the notorious Longridge Farm case. A potential murder victim because of her association with that case, she is also a suspect in the killing of the other two women who participated in the tragedy.

Miss Leslie Margaret Katherine Casewell

A woman who is in her twenties. With her somewhat masculine appearance and voice (and a coat and hat like those worn by the murderer), she is highly suspect, especially because she refuses to reveal any details from her past or her motive for returning to England from Majorca after a twelve-year absence. She is, however, remarkably familiar with the Longridge Farm case.

Mrs. Boyle

A middle-aged, demanding and judgmental woman. Her whining and complaining inspires each of the other characters to immediately dislike her. A former court magistrate, she sent three children to Longridge Farm, where they were terribly abused. She may (or may not) be murdered in the play.

Giles Ralston

Mollie’s husband of exactly one year. About the same age as Mollie, he is a seemingly average middle-class young Englishman. He and Mollie married only three
weeks after meeting, so Giles’ past remains a mystery. He is suspicious and jealous by nature.

Detective Sergeant Trotter

A young police detective in his twenties. He has a London accent (slightly Cockney). He appears halfway through the first act, ostensibly to investigate the murder that had occurred earlier in London. When questioning the suspects, however, he frequently becomes impatient and agitated.

Christopher Wren

An unkempt and nervous young man in his twenties, he initially claims to be named after the famous architect who built St. Paul’s. Orphaned at an early age and having deserted from the army, he is trying to forget an unhappy childhood. Moreover, he confesses to lying about his name and his occupation as an architect. His behavior throughout the play is erratic and highly suspicious.

Major Metcalf

A middle-aged man with a military bearing. He seems to be a “normal” English gentleman, but like most of the characters in the play he is pretending to something other than he is.

Mr. Paravacini

He is a dark, mustached foreigner of indeterminate age. He speaks with an Italian accent. He is an unexpected guest at Monkswell Manor, claiming that his car overturned in a snowdrift. Because of his mysterious arrival, eccentric behavior, and apparent effort to look older than he is, he, too, is immediately suspect.

GENERAL AUDITION GUIDELINES:

  • This is a non-equity, community theater production. However, all actors will receive a small travel stipend. All roles are available!
  • Only those 18 years of age or older will be allowed to audition for this production.

  • Headshots and resumes may be uploaded on the audition form ahead of time.

  • All performances will take place at The Levoy Theatre, 130 High St N, Millville, NJ 08332.
  • Rehearsals will take place at The Levoy Theatre and The Levoy Arts & Education Center, 16 E Pine St, Millville, NJ 08332.

AUDITIONS: July 14, 7:00-9:00pm, & July 15, 6:30-7:30pm, by appointment at The Levoy Arts & Education Center, 16 E Pine St, Millville, NJ 08332.

  • The auditions will consist of cold readings from the script.

  • Plan to arrive 10 minutes before your audition time slot.

  • Walk-ins will be accepted between appointments.
